Why Do Chinks Never Take Leftovers Home From Chingchong Restaurants?

why dont they take this stuff home? xo gooks pls explain. |

Mom always said leftovers are bad -> you say leftovers are bad -> tell your kids that leftovers are bad, and no one ever questions it.
I've heard of people asking Chinese moms why white people don't have to do things (e.g., drink hot water, not wash their hair or really even move for 30 days post-birth, etc.) and the answer is "Asian bodies are different" and apparently that's supposed to be a satisfying answer. |

One stick-thin Chinese woman (mother of 2) pecks at food whenever we go out and always throws away 90% of it - never takes it home. (The rest of us take leftovers home, so it's not an embarrassment issue.)
Not sure how this works IRL in families where mom works.
But they'll eat tons of frozen dumplings and those salty and fatty ramen bowls with 10-year shelf lives, so who knows. |

it's all ordered family style and one person gets the check but that person is hosting the table and so shouldn't get the leftovers.
generally 1 person is in charge of ordering. you don't order for yourself.
i'd guess it's more common to see people take home leftovers if they're out with family vs. socially.
and generally checks are not split. and the person who gets the check is going to be one of the wealthier, bigger, higher up persons at the table and so shouldn't take the food home. |

In a group setting the Chinese looks down on individuals that takes whatever it can when the ownership isn't that obvious.
Here, the group think is, the leftovers should go to the one who needs it the most, and each member expresses his/her lack of need until someone expresses his desire to take it. The person who takes the leftovers in this manner is not to be looked down upon when there is a genuine need for it (for example, busy young couple with children having little time to cook). However, when all members are in a similar situation and doesn't really need it, it is easy to see how the leftovers doesn't go to anyone via default.
In the scenario where one person announces that he will take the leftovers before anyone else had a chance to decline, that will be considered bad taste, but will typically not be met with any resistance because it will seem petty to bicker over leftover food, the group will just be less likely to invite him again. The problem with this line of logic is, if someone even brings up the issue of who the leftovers should go to, if everyone else declines it (the likely scenario), this person will be saddled with the leftovers even if he doesn't want it (because by raising the issue he has implied the principle that the food shouldn't go to waste). As such， when there isn't a genuine need, the leftovers will go to waste because no one will raise the issue and risk getting the leftovers.
However, in groups that has a clear power imbalance (boss/employee, uncle vs nephew etc), it is usually considered standard practice for the superior to urge the inferior to take the food home (even if the superior foots the bill) and it is considered impolite for the inferior to decline (refusing generosity from your superiors). |

Like most of the noodles = will be soggy and nasty within an hour
The rarer broth stuff - not as bad, and you can certainly reheat it but the way they eat (putting rice into the soup) means that it'll still be weird after putting it in the fridge
But in terms of most soups and stews, the ones made at home will not have rice in it in the bowl so its easier to keep.
KBBQ - easy but still... eh
stuff like the spicy rice cakes or korean fried chicken - easy.

My MIL (maybe Chinese thing and maybe just her) gets really into the texture of food -- it's up there with taste and appearance. She'll complain about the rice, veggie, noodle, etc. texture when it's imperceptibly different or not something I would have thought of (setting aside personal preferences). I can see her not wanting to eat a soup the next day because the noodles are too soft or something like that, whereas I would just eat it and acknowledge that it was better the day before. |
