I learned how to weld by building this home brewery. Designed entirely as I went and welded everything from the frame to the drain and thermometer fittings in the kettles. Before building this, I'd never done any woodworking or metalworking aside from a couple semesters of woodshop class in 8th grade. It took 18 months from start to finish and by the end I'd amassed about $10k in tools.

Never really was all that interested in brewing; I was mostly interested in building the thing and automating the process. Held onto it for a few years but sold it after I lost interest in drinking.

This is impressive. Not so much the welding (that too) but mostly your design with pumps from HLT to sparge to BK. Curious though - most of he nice prefab “brew sculptures” are multi-level. Any reason you did lumps instead? I have done some brewing in past but nothing nearly so fancy. And I got tired of it too, though it’s a 180 skill to have.

Ty. I went with the single tier pump design partly because the its how more advanced $5k+ systems are constructed, and I wanted an advanced system. I also designed it to take up as little floor space in my garage as possible, since I had a single car garage with a very well equipped metal and woodshop and floor space was the one thing I lacked. To make the fooorspace that it did occupy usable, I designed it to fit entirely underneath a rolling workbench, that way when it wasn’t in use I’d still be able to take advantage of the space since just about every project requires a workbench. Here’s a pic:

Very impressive, you got way more into brewing than I ever did. My next big project is going to be restoring a couple goose neck trailers. One is a 20’ cattle trailer that was on land I bought. It has been sitting for something like 30 years and has a giant tree growing through the side. It’s also buried in mud. Needs new hubs, wheels, brakes, wiring, floor and repairs to the metal. The other is a triple axle 24’ flat bed in better condition but still needs new brakes, wiring, deck. Prole as fuck, but even buying used-but-working it would cost 10k for these two. I figure I’ll spend 2k and some weekends instead. Beats hell out of being inside watching tv.

I never took much interest in learning about beer styles or brewing beyond the basics. Once I learned how much grain to use and a couple types of hop - mostly Chinook and Fuggles - I basically made the same beer every time. I’d make slight variations to color, hop types, boil and dry hop times, but the end result was always a mild, very drinkable “IPA” with around 6% ABV (I always called it IPA because that’s the only type of beer that I was familiar with).

Beyond a general lack of interest, since I was brewing 20 to 40 gallons per session, the last thing I wanted to be stuck with was some ultra rich 10% ABV Russian Imperial chocolate stout that beer snobs pretend to like - I wanted to ensure that people were going to actually want to drink my beer.

Nothing wrong with practical projects, brother. My next project is also going to be trailer modification. I’m going to install aluminum frame shelving and possibly some sort of aluminum framed/topped workbench in my enclosed trailer.

You built any other cool shit?

Here's a few other projects:

The 1st and 2nd pics are of a MASSIVE firepit that I made for Dirte. Pic was taken when it was about 90% complete.

The 3rd - 5th pics are of fire pits that I either made on commission or donated to local fundraisers.

The 6th - 8th pics are of live edge tables that I built. I made this huge tool for flattening slabs a little while back, so I both welded the frames and flattened the wood.

The 9th and 10th pics are of this giant (8'3" by 5'3") butcher block kitchen island I built and installed at this massive new house some friends had built.

cr. It seems like the trades are increasingly being viewed as an option for everybody, but when I was in school they were viewed as the thing you did only if you were a dumb prole who couldn't cut it academically. I never had any idea how 180 it was to build things until I decided to buy a welder and learn how to fabricate stuff when I was 26. No idea why it happened, but I bought the welder, dumped my girlfriend, and threw myself into building stuff for a while.
