12:00pm: Leave Century City office for train station
12:30pm: Arrive at train station
1:00pm: Train leaves LA
4:30pm: Train arrives in SF
4:50pm: Arrive at final destination in SF

Compared to the following for a flight:
12:00pm: Leave Century City
12:30pm: Arrive airport
1:30pm: Flight leaves
2:30pm: Flight lands
3pm: get in Uber / get on Bart
3:45pm: Arrive at SF office

The worst part? The train would generally be MORE EXPENSIVE than the plane.

I travel to LA multiple times a year and never arrive more than 1 hour before my flight at LAX. No problem.

There's this thing called the "Wall of 4 Hours" where for a railroad to be competitive vs. a flight it has to take 4 hours or less.
Over that, planes usually win out.
See: Boston - DC.
Example of the high-speed train that works b/c of this : Seoul-Busan, round 3 hrs
NYC-Boston: just under 4 hrs on Acela
NYC - DC: under 3 hrs on acela
Tokyo-Hiroshima - under 4hrs

There are four big reasons.
1) Difficulty and cost of acquiring right-of-way. It is insanely expensive.
2) Numerous and litigious stakeholders. Building anything that impacts extremely wealthy people, Native American land etc. is a nightmare.
3) Corrupt political environment. Around 25% of ANY infrastructure project in SoCal has to go to minority businesses. Often politically connected minority businesses.
4) Onerous environmental approval process. Every project has to go through a NEPA compliance process on top of an even more demanding CEQA process.
They are actually successfully building a lot of great stuff in SoCal, it is just way more expensive and time consuming than it should be.

Wow this is even dumber than usual. CA a couple years finished the Bay Bridge upgrade which literally was the biggest infrastructure project in the US in the last like 25 years or something.
LA has built out its subway and train system insanely in the last 10-15 years.
LAX just got a new intl terminal.
OAK airport got a BART train link
