I've noticed now internet plans say "up to" the advertised speed. Too bad you only get that speed at 2 a.m. on a Tuesday.

ISPs are also investing less in infrastructure. net neutrality is one shitlib policy that's actually good.

Without net neutrality, cable and phone companies could carve the internet into fast and slow lanes.” But Internet speeds in 2018 actually rose by 35.8 percent. Rather than shoving users into a slow lane, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) upgraded everyone’s lane.

"fast lanes" are flame. ISPs are basically like waiters who let your food sit for 10 mins before bringing it out. Not because they're busy, but simply because they're assholes. And your meal still costs the same price...

In 2018, David Choffnes, assistant professor of computer and information science at Northeastern University in Boston, and his fellow researchers developed an app to measure if ISPs regularly throttle streaming services like YouTube and Netflix. The results? Nearly every major wireless provider specifically throttles video, even when the network is perfectly capable of handling the load. In a statement last fall, Choffnes pointed out, “There’s no evidence that any of these policies are only happening during network overload. They’re throttling video traffic even when the network doesn’t need to. It happens 24/7, and in every region where we have tests.”

I have literally never had any streamed video pause for buffering.
