But we can't even come up with a couple more algorithms (JUST in principle because we dont even have the hardware to run them) for quantum computers.
We are in a state of decline, even if the momentum will carry science forward for another couple decades. |

if you look back at how people in the 1950s imagined today would be, they imagined tremendous advances in all areas, not just computers. supercheap pollution-free energy, superfast transport, colonies on moons and planets, star travel.
instead: we have 100 year old subways that barely work, there's been no speed innovation in travel besides the shuttered concorde, people have pushed relentlessly to shut down nuclear energy plants... nixon declared a war on cancer in 1971 and declared that it would be beaten by the bicentennial. a definite, optimistic plan like this would be unthinkable from a public official.
what happened? is it cultural? is it the reddit-tier cynicism and nihilism that makes everyone sound like a mewling participant in an Atlas Shrugged cocktail party? is it excessive regulation? |

So you have lots of dumb stuff for dumbs and you defang the smarts by making them self-segregate and pride themselves on their cultural superiority and connoisseurship, which becomes a key part of their identity formation as they emerge as the laboring class of the knowledge/information economy. You go from the early 70s when Hollywood was in its all time nadir and there were three tv channels to the 80s blockbusters and the advent of cable, then the takeover of cable and video games in the 90s making several hundred options available to consumers at all times, and then the internet which became infinity content.
