I was trying to justify in my head why I spend so much time on xo. It's not really that much fun anymore and is otherwise a completely unproductive use of time. At this point it is purely an addiction.

for me, wasting time at work isn't a good thing. it just means i'm less productive 9-5 and have to put in more hours because the same amount of work still needs to get done. i've found that when i'm working on something, as soon as i hit a speed bump, i instinctively open xo and before i know it an hour will have gone by. the thing still needs to get done, i've just managed to delay the pain of slogging through it with nothing to show for it.

there has been so much low quality polithreading in the last year or two, i think that has turned off a lot of good poasters who would be otherwise engaging with the forum more frequently & with more effort. most comedy is pretty neutral, it's something that people of all political and cultural stripes can engage with and enjoy

and also many of our best poasters are legitimately good comedians and character writers, it's where we excel imo. i know of forums that are better for serious writing, forums that are better for political discussion, but i don't know a single one that beats XO in the comedy department

the "intimacy" that i refer to below definitely allows for an environment where people aren't afraid to get experimental with their poasting---and the familiarity between poasters allows for others to easily "read" what you're putting down and allows them to riff in-theme much quicker

maybe it's wrong of me but i'm assuming the worst of potential new poasters---you know as well as i do how unfunny and hostile the Internet At Large has become in these dark days

i'd really be worried that site etiquette wouldn't be followed or that the culture that has kept xo's prime movers coming back year after year would be diluted or lost (especially when it seems like this place attracts the loser dregs of bellevue just as well as it attracts nice, intelligent people)

it's hard to police content when your main lever for moderation is mob-bullying people who break unwritten codes of standards, you know? (and tbh i find that distasteful, even when the scenario calls for it) but we also don't want moderation so...the veneer of civility here is much more fragile than we think, and it's worth noting that once it's gone it's probably gone for good

also the conversation we're having isn't all that different from the greater conversation happening rn about "building higher quality communities that allow for less restrictions AND better security". this forum exists as a little clockwork city microcosm of the society it exists in, so the issues we're facing as a national community aren't too dissimilar from the issues we're facing as a little internet community. i suppose i could win a few cheap kidney punch points from Red Team by calling you an "open borders CUCKBOI" but i'll refrain from that until it seems like you're about to win the discussion 😉

XO has a basic structural problem which is that as people age and become successful they have less time to engage in XO, ceteris paribus. The solution is structural: find a way to continue to bring new talent, site participants in while preserving the culture. The solution isn't to whine about how you aren't receiving your sufficient quotient of entertainment from a quasi-anonymous message board created c 1999 for aspiring law students 80% of whom aren't even alive at this point anyway because of the Legion Plague.

there's a different private forum that i'm a member of that deals with this by uh

they have a system where accounts accumulate points over time and these points can be used to purchase site invites (little aesthetic doodads too). you get maybe 2-3 a year (2? i think) so it makes you really think about who you're going to give those to. you're also responsible in a way for the people you bring on so there's another filter there

it also helps that they don't have much of an "alt culture" outside of character RP stuff and the mods are also a little quicker to ban---but i like the basic concept and it's served them well enough

communities are always going to be either: 1. open to the general public and therefore constantly bringing in new members, or 2. closed to the general public and reserved for in-group members. both types have their pluses and minuses and exist alongside each other. present-day XO is definitely a type 2 group, which is why all our humor revolves around inside jokes that are only funny because in-group members are already familiar with them
