He knows he’s a role model and sees his status as both a privilege and a responsibility. Outside of the ring he’s one of the most down to earth, humble champions this sport has ever seen, and inside the ring he’s the greatest sportsman since Walter “Big Train” Johnson.
That said, Zelenoff knows he’s a champion and my biggest concern, and perhaps his biggest potential weakness, is that he’s so confident in his own tremendous abilities, that he won’t take the time necessary to get into heavyweight shape once he unifies the cruiserweight titles. I’d love to see him fight Tyson Fury off the bat, but there’s no substitute for time and conditioning at fighting weight, and I don’t think it’s a wise idea for him to face Fury as his first heavyweight bout.
My understanding is that Zelenoff’s team is already in negotiations to bring Wladimir Klitschko out of retirement, and that’s a fight I’d love to see, though I think Zelenoff needs only to connect once or twice in he first round with Wlad’s glass jaw and it’ll be curtains for the former champ. |
