it's a uniquely surreal feeling to go back and read an author or an essay/book that you admired when you were younger, only to re-read it again in the present day and be able to easily pick apart the inconsistencies, false statements, and mistruths. how could i have ever bought into this, you think to yourself

then you remember that most people live their entire lives without ever changing any of their views on anything to any significant degree (if you even think that normal people can genuinely "have views" on anything)

very strange and interesting stuff

reading a tech/philosophy blog that i used to frequent back in the early 2010s. it went off the deep end once the drumpf era started, like so many "intellectual" hangouts. i shrugged my shoulders and moved on

i randomly happened upon it today, and now i'm reading the essays from back before drumpf. and i can easily see now that they were always pseudo-intellectual nonsense. i mean, there are some good ideas, don't get me wrong. but so many of these observations about the world are just laughably false, and have been demonstrated to be laughably false just within the last 10 years of unfolding reality

sometimes i wonder if people are even cognizant that they were ever wrong, or even conscious of their own views subconsciously changing based on evidence unfolding before them. i've certainly been wrong about many things, but i always recognize when i'm wrong about something - it's super obvious when you try to add up 5 + 5 several times, and it never comes out to be 11. but i don't think that very many people are like this, and sort of just keep drifting through life without ever recognizing that anything changes

Ya I've come to realize that nearly every single person is just laughably wrong about every single thing requiring judgement or predictive power. It boggles the mind that they don't have an identity crisis upon seeing their predictions rendered false time and again, but no, they just barrel ahead with as much confidence as ever.

Interesting description. It mirrors my sentiments regarding 3Quarks Daily.

I once took many ideas from that site...until its focus seemed to have shifted towards a more political than a roundly informative one.

that is really the problem with american politics--both sides have a core of great ideas, but both have been poisoned with nonsensical ideas too...
