ally.

Basically it's showing you how the GM factory shuts down in Dayton and then is reopened several years later by a Chinese company, in this case Fuyao Glass (a story playing out all over America). Long story short, they bring in a boatload of Chinese workers to work with the American workers. They generally get along but obviously are quite different. They try to brand the company as very "American" and downplay Chinese ownership to make the American workers comfortable. But the Chinese ownership is obvious as everyone worships the Chairmen and even small things like company slogans put up on walls written in "Engrish" or with grammatical errors. The American workers take some of the Chinese workers fishing and to Thanksgiving dinners and teach them to shoot guns. They really like the guns because gun ownership is illegal in China. The Chinese workers are generally more efficient because in China they worked 12 hour days for very little pay and were always under the threat of being let go if they didn't behave like perfect little worker bees. They perceive the American workers as lazy and inefficient and are shocked to hear they only work 8 hour days in America. The Chinese workers get mixed messages as they're told to assimilate into American culture, and they do try, but Chairmen also implores them to remember they are "Chinese no matter where you live or where you are buried" when he worries about the factory losing money, because he relies on Chinese 'efficiency' (read: $lave labor). There is conflict about having a union. Of course unions are unheard of in China and the Chinese management is death opposed to unions and Chairmen threatens to shut the factory down if the workers unionize. The workers of course really have no choice, but do push for a union. Chinese boss can't understand why his American president and VP aren't 'stopping' this, so he fires them. The American workers who were making $29 hourly at GM now make $12.84 hourly with Fuyao. It just generally speaks to how the working class is doing the best it can, in China or America, but are just generally fucked over by all these forces at play and how standards and pay and lifestyle for the working class are just being rolled back and drilled back down into slave labor. The Chinese slave labor culture due to their huge poor population + communism and American legal/union culture that has workers rights and workers who were formerly middle class is the main conflict. It's a microcosm of the American-Chinese differences. Anyway, it's worth a watch but fucking depressing.

It's growing for now. Their wages are increasing too. Eventually the slave labor from which China benefited for so long will change, and either they will move on to another country to keep slave economy going or wages go up. But we have a lot of chinks to enrich before American workers are going to head back up to GM wages in a Chink Factory world.

Couldn’t get over how industrious the Chinese workers were and the lazy fat cat unmotivated Americans. Really weakened the unionization argument.

because they hail from a civilization in which 94% of the population is one generation removed from living on grass and wok-fried dog meat, living in a thatch hut.

that's the kind of civilization they produce, without white intervention, when left to their own devices. so they are quite understandably motivated (for the time being).

to be fair, we are also a lesser society than we used to be. These aren’t your grandpa’s unions in 2019, these are just people looking for undeserved handouts.

Yes and no. The GM workers when from $29 to $13 an hour. That's over a 50 percent pay cut. Many lost homes, many moved in with family. It's devastating. Yes unions are fucked up and greedy many time, but I see the other side too.

Yes and GM closed that factory because it was no longer economically viable. It’s fine to empathize with the Americans but I don’t think you’re appreciating the macroeconomic forces at play. These people are fat and lazy and failed to adapt to changing headwinds. The lion’s share of the blame rests with them.

Can you blame them though? These people lost everything, the future they thought they had secured was erased and now globalization appears to be lowering and lowering standards, safety, expectation and mobility for the working class.

Are you really going to blame them and the union and the "economically untenable" position or is it corporations outsourcing to increase profits? Of course they'd rather pay desperate Chinese workers a quarter what they pay Americans for the same or possibly, better, output. But it's a dangerous dance going on.

They're more industrious and team focused (natural disposition?) but they're also FAR more desperate and overworked to the point of exhaustion and no American worker would tolerate the conditions Chinese workers work in, in China. Therein lies the conflict when Chinese management engages with American workers. American workers were formerly union and middle class. These Chinese people were dirt poor peasants so even a soul crushing factory job at minimum wage with no benefits give them more hope than subsistence farming.

Right, however that’s the price to be a competitive manufacturer today. So Barry was right and we should stop lamenting the loss of American manufacturing?

I don't think this was the point at all. It's a terrible loss. Trump and Obama I think are on the same page about trying to incentivize companies to keep jobs here and repatriate as many jobs as possible. The doc showed the working class at the merciless headwinds of globalism, doing its best but ultimately are being set back.

Libs watching something like this are going to judge the American workers and place the blame squarely on their shoulders. You've already seen some of this upthread. The second the American worker's Scumbag/URM phenotype is seen, the lib knows what judgment to make. They've been trained on this for years. Libs have been anti-worker since Clinton delivered the blow that split the Left.

Literally nothing that libs do IRL intersects with "work" or anything real so they don't see the harm in sending icky manufacturing jobs to China. And they've been trained to see azns as subhuman worker drones so it suits them just fine if all of the jobs go to Chinamen. They could care less about declining living standards and declining phenotypes and meth/heroin addicts everywhere. This is why Trump won Ohio by a fuckin' 8 points btw, in case you were wondering. He just had to pay a little attention to these people and it was though they were galvanised by a bolt of lightning.

it sort of ham fistedly gets its point across that we're all really after the same thing - food on the table for our children, a comfortable life, safety. feel bad for the Chinese workers after watching it. I also feel heartened that the americans still have a sense of pride and won't degrade themselves in subhuman conditions for a few shekels

It was funny how in the Chinese factory, the Americans were weirded out a bit by all the Chinese performances at the party and songs and dancing with lyrics like "we strive to be polite and hard working,", but then they play YMCA and all the fat Americans get up on stage and dance.
