since you're in california you should buy t-bills or invest in a fund that owns them. t-bills avoid state income tax.

e.g. vanguard federal money market fund or an ETF like BIL or SHV or GBIL

Ordinary income in bank interest v long term cap gains on a vanguard money market fund makes a difference.

Tell us more about how you earn long term capital gains on a fund that you buy for a dollar and sell for a dollar and collect nothing but interest in between.

There is no guarantee that $1 NAV stays at $1 (read the prospectus, it’s my job to write them). It’s a mutual fund (or whatever ETF version) where any securities held over one year are subject LTCGs versus a savings account where principal is guaranteed and the account is FDIC insured up to $250k. There is no FDIC insurance for mutual funds and theoretically your investment could lose value (but that won’t happen).

“You could lose money by investing in the Fund. Although the Fund seeks to preserve the value of your investment at $1.00 per share, it cannot guarantee it will do so. An investment in the Fund is not insured or guaranteed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation or any other government agency. The Fund’s sponsor has no legal obligation to provide financial support to the Fund, and you should not expect that the sponsor will provide financial support to the Fund at any time.”

They both pay the same yield, about 2.15% currently.

Money market funds are mutual funds and these are qualified dividends. There is no guarantee of principal and you need to add in the expense ratio to calculate return but frankly if you don’t care to pull out the money within a year, why would you ever do a savings account.

cq. that's why barclays is good. there might be a higher rate at some point in time but i dont wanna have to check every month and open new accounts every month for some rate that's 0.15% better at the 2nd regional bank of directional shitstate, and then have it stealth lowered

chase - 1.98% CD rate for 9 months to a year with yield of 2% for $10K+

you can get higher rates from online only banks like amex but i personally like chase because it will get bailed out 99.9999999% and if chase does goes bust we will have far bigger things to worry (societal collapse, civil war) than a CD

*not investment or legal advice*
