The COUNSEL makes a big cup of coffee, hunkers down, and works feverishly to accomplish the client's goals in two days. He feels proud for being a "great lawyer" and doing it in two days. He makes it seem effortless to the client (he wants to feel like a good lawyer) despite being exhausted and depressed. He likely billed no more than 30 hours over the two days. Maybe he has an associate help and bill another 4-5 hours.

The PARTNER tells the client they can get it done but that it will require ALL HANDS ON DECK. He doesn't give a shit about being a "good lawyer" (LJL at law dorks). He creates a sense of urgency and panic in the client for creating the fire drill. Instead of going at it alone like our dorky counsel friend, he staffs it with a service partner, a counsel, and four associates ("sorry about your weekend plans; remember that we'll look favorably on this during your review"). The associates are given overlapping make-work. The service partner reviews everything ("Attention to [X]"). The counsel? He still does the heavy lifting like a good dork. The outcome? The same two days but 80 hours are billed and the partner tells the client that it was "nearly impossible but we got it done."
