We joke about HVAC repairmen but...

My buddy has been an HVAC MAN since he was 18, paid off house, engaged, dogs. He’s a lot happier than 90% of the strivers I went to LS with trying to pay down 300k in nondischargeable debt by eating shit for 12hrs a day, single into their 30s, no actual friends.
IMO, strivers are proles who are desperate to escape proledom, take on a ton of debt to do it, and realize (in their twilight years) that class is determined at birth. HTH

These aren't jokes, this is a CR life path.
Also: Car mechanic. My cousin worked for a fucking car dealership that paid for him to get all his certifications. He's a bit of an asshole and has been ONE WRONG MOVE fired a few times, but always gets a new job in like three days. People aren't going to stop driving and are only going to get more mechanically clueless, so he has a job until the day he dies if he wants one. LJL at law.

i went to his bachelor party, all the other guys were blue collar/ironworkers/union etc, but they were smart in their own way.
they were 180 after they realized that I wasn’t a snob because of a fancy white collar job. Also interesting, they’re not big into drugs like the “upper” class. Get fucked up and go to wet republic, have fun, no pretention, bud lights are enough to have a good time.
We all rolled together though which was hilarious.

trades are very underrated
it's quite common to call contractors to get quotes and only a few bother to show up bc they're so busy with work that they don't need ur money
just imagine trying to pull that off as a lolyer

It's pretty cool. Somewhat high pressure every once in awhile due to tight project schedules and demanding customer, so work sometimes has to be performed quickly, overnight, on weekends, etc. We sell huge system installations and these guys go out to get everything up and running, etc. They also get sent out when something breaks. Tons of travel - mostly domestic but some international. They all have high level elite traveler with every major airline. Most of my dudes are in their 40s and 50s. Hispanic. About half are veterans and learned the trade while in the military. They all have nice houses and nice cars (F250 trucks, Camaro SS, one dude has a Hellcat). I go on trips with them when the customer or the installation is particularly strategic to our business, and it's always a chill trip. Three days in a major city, usually done with work by 4pm, steak dinner, strip club. It's really a great gig.

XO doesn't understand that very few tradesman are driving their own van and taking their own contracts. Most work for some shitty regional company that just dispatches them out. They have the same shitty HR handbooks, uniforms, and they get piss-tested all the time.
The independent contractors XO fantasizes about are the "master" tradesman who have put in 20 years in the shit already and finally earned enough to set up their own shop.

just having your shit together and your license or whatever and some experience is enough

I had a client who started in residential HVAC repair and servicing right after high school. A few years later he started his own business. He sold it at 38, after his house was paid off, for a few million, plus a small monthly license fee ($2,000, IIRC).
He also has around a dozen rentals he bought dirt cheap close to the bottom of the market.
The best part is, the guy isn't particularly smart, a bit brighter than average. But he's charismatic and driven.
lol @ lawyers and their billable hours.
