Sulla is an excellent example of an ideal Dictator in the context of a Republic, where he abdicated power after accomplishing his goals in a ruthless fashion. Few leaders of this type are comparable, I think the closest in American history being Lincoln given the situation.
For those that don’t know Sulla proscribed (created lists of names of people he wanted dead and incentivized their killing by splitting their assets between the state and the person who brought them in) the kleptocratic political elites of the time and quelled civil unrest then retired, this helped to reduce some of the inequality and corruption in Rome at the time and made things better for the citizenry.
Imagine being put in charge of a country (or seizing power) and publishing a list of who you think are the worst and most corrupt people in positions of power, once they all are dead their assets revert to the state (your control). Then retiring. In the modern day being able to do that would truly be incredible. You could take out entire political machines in cities like NY, Chicago, SF and reform the government of those places overnight - confiscating the assets of the former rulers along the way to distribute to citizens in the area.
Sulla also won a Grass Crown - the highest achievable honor possible in Ancient Rome.
