For PI there's a guy out of Texas who specializes in trucking cases. John Fisher in upstate NY does med mal (Google him and get his book for free). Don Rolfe in Portland, Oregon does an estate planning podcast (cool guy, I talked to him on the phone. He left a firm with no planning and no money to go solo. He'd just had it with working for other asshole lawyers.) Search your podcast player by topic and these will come up. There's a tax and estate planning podcast out of New Jersey that goes deep into the weeds.

Also listened to a ton of the Portland estate planning guy (or is it Seattle)? I think he has several podcast series. Especially for new solos.

DESCRIBE your tradename.

Geographic?

Some quality adjective (e.g., Premier Super Law)?

Sophisticated-sounding foreign language, like Latin?

Description of practice (e.g., Carl's Elder Abuse Law Firm)?

Something else?

Combo of geographic and description of practice. One major benefit of doing this is the ability to sell the practice.

Do you think the same of medical and dental practices? If someone has built up relationships, staff, brand, and name recognition, a newbie can ride those coattails and "buy" the business out of the business profits. Seller gets equity out of the business and newbie gets a well positioned operation without having to write a check.

I have been a lawyer for over a decade and have never known of anyone buy or sell a legal practice.

Lawyers do often just wind down a practice, usually because they didn't build a lasting system. New lawyers often start by hanging a shingle, but it's much tougher to go that way. What I described is a pretty common way to pass off existing business.

Alright fuckers. My practice area is highly dependent on printing and scanning shit in. I have every letter, document, etc scanned in. Need letter and legal size. Is this the credited two tray mono printer?

https://www.brother-usa.com/products/hll6200dwt

8,000 page refills are $110

Then get a nice scansnap device

Look on amazon and see how much knockoff toner is for that model. $110 is insane. Brother is good though. So is canon.

Would it be overkill to get a dedicated printer for printing envelopes?

Just but a used business-class laserjet with a network adapter for that. I have a 2300dn from like 1998 that still works perfectly. You can buy a usb wireless adapter for it if that's your thing, or just run an ethernet cable to your router. You can print a status page that will tell you how many pages it's printed over its lifetime. Easy to find ones with less than 10,000 pages on them for $50-100 on Craigslist or whatever. Use that for shit like envelopes where paper handling is key and you don't need the thing to be lightning fast.

Use the brother for everything else because it will be much faster than an old laserjet.

You should buy a dedicated scanner, and don't go cheap on it. The automatic document feeders in most multifunction devices suck shit. You want something that's fast, does 400dpi or above natively in PDF, and won't jam. Be prepared to shell out for this. Do not buy a cheapo scanner.

My prior firm used to buy off-lease multifunction copiers that had scanning, copying, printing, and stapling. We'd pick them up for around $1,200 to $1,400. They were an amazing deal. The last one was this: https://www.nextlevelbsi.com/products/toshiba-estudio-4555c-tami

I think we got a 90 day warranty. There was usually one visit required in that time, typically for some sort of sensor cleaning or something like that. Then I'd guess we'd have about one repair visit per year that would cost around $100 or $200. After about three years, we'd swap it for another off-lease copier.

I don't know, but I'm a huge fan of color. I couldn't go back now.

I always use toner refills after the initial set is exhausted. The main problem with them is that the quality can be spotty, so I always have a backup ready and not have to wait for an exchange.

It seems to cost me $50 or $60 every time I've had to do that. You'll pay for your own color printer pretty fast at that rate -- at least I would. And it's nice not to have another layer of organization and hassle to worry about (their hours, turn around time, traffic, etc.).

Cr. At least just for letterhead. Looks more legit for a solo. I'd take color letterhead over a dedicated envelope printer. Can always just use labels for envelopes. Good to have a blazing fast b&w though too.
