I was just wondering if grades matter; of course, I would have a compelling reason to want to visit another school (it wouldnt be for ranking or personal preference)--it would be a legit reason. I was wondering if anybody had any info on this and what the decisions are based upon.

i looked into doing it this year (and wound up staying put). basically, the information i got was that it varies quite widely depending on which schools you're talking about (and it has little to do with where they're ranked). Some schools don't want to let you visit elsewhere absent a very compelling reason. Others, like mine, say they rarely turn anyone's request down - you just had to meet with the dean that heads the academic committee and explain the situation. I think if you were doing it "to try something different," you'd have a relatively tough time.
Also, some schools like to take them, while others don't. The only stumbling block that they told me about is that you generally need to go to a school that ends earlier than your current one - i was told that i wouldn't be able to graduate unless all my exams had been graded and the scores turned back into my original school.
