At some point before the fatal event, one of the rounds had been fired; although there was no powder charge, the energy from the fired primer was enough to push the bullet into the gun barrel, where it got stuck (a condition known as a squib load). For the fatal scene, which called for the revolver to be fired at Lee from a distance of 3.6–4.5 meters (12–15 ft), the dummy cartridges were replaced with blank rounds, which contained a powder charge and primer, but no bullet, allowing the gun to be fired without the risk of an actual projectile. When the blank round was fired, the bullet lodged in the barrel was propelled forward with almost the same force as if the round were live, and it struck Lee in the abdomen.[99][100]
After Massee pulled the trigger, Lee was supposed to fall forward instead of backward. When the director said "cut", Lee did not stand up and the crew thought he was either still acting or kidding around. Jeff Imada, who immediately checked Lee, noticed something wrong when he came close and noted Lee was unconscious and breathing heavily. Medic Clyde Baisey went over and shook Lee to see if he was dazed by hitting his head during the fall, but did not think Lee had been shot since there was no bleeding. Baisey took Lee's pulse, which was regular, but within two to three minutes it slowed down dramatically, and stopped.[101] |

"Bonanza Creek Ranch and we had two people accidentally shot on a movie set by a prop gun," the caller says. "We need help immediately."
The caller, who identified herself as the script supervisor, confirmed that it was the movie's "director" and "camerawoman" who were shot and said she wasn't aware whether the gun was loaded with a real bullet.
"We have two injuries from a movie gun shot," she echoed. The caller then seemingly became very frustrated, but it is unclear who the frustration was directed toward.
"They just f--king AD yelled at me at lunch talking about revisions," she said. "These motherf--kers … Did you see him come up to my desk and yell at me? He's supposed to check the guns. He's responsible for what happened."
The caller added that the accidental shooting occurred during a rehearsal on the New Mexico set, prompting "everyone" to "run out."
The script supervisor was unaware whether there was any "serious bleeding" before passing off the phone to a male, who said that the victims were "alert" and confirmed that there was "one wound on two individuals."
There was a medic present on set who was attending to Hutchins and Souza at the time, he said.
The man then gave instructions to locate them on the ranch before the call ended. |
