What you're probably thinking of is supposed to primarily train your glutes and hamstrings.

Unless you're a competitive athlete, you're probably better off maintaining a neutral spine.

Thanks...with a neutral spine, I can't go down that far and it seems like I'm not doing much. I just want a stronger lower back since I'm sitting down, hunched over for work all day.

You probably need to lower the height on the machine.

This excercise should have a vomparable movent pattern to a Romanian deadlift.

I'm able to have more mobility with a Romanian Deadlift due to a slight bend in the knees, while with back extensions on a 45 degree angle machine, my legs are straight so let range of motion without rounding my lower back.
