US universities need tougher entrance exams like they have in China, Korean, and India. I don't know why they got rid of the SAT Subject Tests. SATs are not that hard and grade inflation in schools is rampant. Of course all of this is by design because they intentionally don't want it to be a numbers game. You can either remove the numbers (difficult to do) or make them meaningless, which is what they have done.

the exceptions would be like CMU where CS has much more clout than the rest of the university and they gatekeep everything related to CS or you're at Cornell that has like 10 undergrad schools. If you're in the hotel school of course there's no CS major path there

I have to assume this dude is Asian based on his outcomes. He simply got dinged at every higher ranked school, which is a common outcome for Asians. Adcoms expect Asian applicants to have perfect grades and SAT's, so they still get dinged unless their extracurriculars are amazing. I can guarantee he would have gotten into a couple higher ranked schools if he were white.

I think you meant to say "Asian female." It's much easier to be admitted to selective colleges as a man than a woman. There are far more women with strong grades/test scores/other credentials than men. The big state schools that are not allowed to consider gender in college admissions are almost 2/3 female these days. Selective colleges know that it will hurt their yield if they become known as a "girls' school," so they blatantly favor men in admissions. It amuses me the way this bort (and the Internet generally) rage against affirmative action, but nobody mentions the fact that at elite schools, having a penis is almost as valuable as having black skin these days.

Despite women routinely claiming (often correctly) that their admissions rates are lower, male applicants have higher test scores than women. The SAT was re-structured in 2017 to give women and minorities better scores, but they still continue to underperform men. A handful of google searches hasn’t revealed any statistical difference between application metrics for admitted male and female students at the Ivies.

It is significantly harder to get into elite schools if you are female. You can tell if a school does not discriminate against women in admissions because their gender ratio will be severely skewed. Off the top of my head, the undergraduate population at UNC is almost 2/3 female these days.

For the “CS programs” he got dinged at can he still apply to the university at large?? If so, he should get into the university of his choice, proceed to take the hardest CS classes or closely related math classes (graph theory, combinatorics), launch his own projects, humiliate all CS majors, then transfer into the program junior year.
