If you don't want to, or are not able to make partner at a big firm, what are your options as a litigator?

Transactional/corporate lawyers often look for in-house jobs after 2,3,4 years. What do litigators do who want to leave the firm after a few years?

Lateral to gov't or AUSA sounds pretty interesting. Is it a hard to make this step? (Competition etc.) How many years do people typically work at a big law firm before moving on? (I'm thinking of people who are not interested in making partner. Who take the job to pay off loans and get some experience.)

Competition depends on the agency and the AUSA location. DOJ and AUSA at a choice city are really sought after jobs. You should look into working for a USAO or DOJ this summer. Both are great 1L jobs.

I think AUSA and DOJ are pretty competitive. But there are plenty of other federal agencies with relatively interesting work, as well as state (my uni has a whole team of lawyers who have pretty SWeet jobs) and local jobs.

It seems like most people work at a firm 3-5 years before moving on to those positions.

"I think AUSA and DOJ are pretty competitive."

Yeah. meaning all the TTT grads coming from TTT jobs beat each other up trying to get them. If you're coming from a top firm and went to a top school, it's not so tough.

Wrong.

Although all AUSAs work for DOJ, the converse is not true of all DOJ attorneys. So people usually refer to them separately. You stupid fuck.
