I think a Mt. Gox level event could plunge the market and send us into the doldrums for a few years... Major security vulnerability in ETH something like that

Few years? No fucking way. Bear cycles in this market will last a month max for the foreseeable future, short of a complete global financial meltdown (and that would probably help core positions in crypto, actually, even if shitcoins get wiped out)

language like this is just further evidence of a ridiculous bubble

too many people who are all in on this shit, even supposedly intelligent ones, have no perspective

fintech wakes up to the fact that there is enormous amounts of cash to be made applying all the insanely smart people they have to what amounts to childs play compared to engineering picosecond-level trading algorithms

realistically it will just be a slow, prolonged decline like the 2013 cycle until the next crop of coins pops up. the few token-based ICOs that make legitimate use of a blockchain instead of just using fagToken in place of paypal/credit cards so they could raise money with a fraudICO$cam will stay around. I think people vastly overestimate the "prole effect" resulting in another 10x--many of the people who have money to play around with and are (theoretically) OK with it going poof are already in it. Middle America won't care about this shit like Korea or China or countries where LOL is a national sport does.

that has already happened in fintech

we didn't have this kind of altcoin environment in 2013 where so much bullshit is obviously worth zero and where this isn't a secret to anyone. maybe it will be a slow decline for the bigcoins while people get real about the scope/market for blockchain shit but something will happen that forces people to get real about it and once that starts 99% of altcoins are immediately fucked. or at least the market is on such thin legs that a "spook" event almost seems inevitable particularly given the vulnerabilities in the technology. it's not like people are waiting on "earnings numbers" like they were during the dot com bubble or that there's a gauge against which people will be able to gradually adjust expectations. nobody really knows how to value this shit, it's just a market feeding itself. at what point do people get too scared to hold dogecoin which has no basis for being held other than the fact that there's a bubble to ride.

These ICO's are just now announcing "partnerships" with real companies. Yes, a lot of times these don't mean anything, but that will be more than enough to keep this party going, for most good coins, for another 18-24 months.

Barring some catastrophic black swan event, which is hard to imagine given the decentralized nature of all this, I agree with others that have said there will likely be a long slow decline. Some of these fraud coins have been pumped with hundreds of millions, and even billions of capital. They have 5-10 team members with no significant overhead. It will take years for them to burn through all this cash. They can keep coming out with meaningless "updates" for a long time. Eventually though, people will see that there will never be a working product, and even if there is, that it is entirely useless in the marketplace. So people will stop contributing to the real shitcoins and take their cash out. But I think this would take a long time.

The interesting question to me is how long will the new projects keep getting pumped with cash the way they did in 2017. I think in the near future, the pump will continue.
