banker here. bankers aren’t rocket scientists but they’re naturals at snifffing out excess returns. do you really think this shitshow has gone under the noses of new york bankers?

Every MD i know owned either eth or bitcoin since last may. big % of junior bankers gamble on alts. wherever dumb money comes from it won’t be bankers or lol hedge fund analysts

the only interesting stories re: new money have to do with institutional investors

i'm thinking a combination of junior bankers dropping in $5-10k + institutions figuring out how to get "mutual funds" ramping into crypto for people with a few hundred dollars each

Seems like institutional investors would be years away from putting money into anything other than the biggest few names.

it’ll be in the form of futures or etfs. no fund manager will ever go before his investors to explain how he lost 50% of his latest fund buying shitcoins on bittrex lmao

When do you envision this happening? Would these ETF's be based on Bitcoin, Eth, maybe Ripple, or would they literally be pegged to the value of shitcoins?

from what i understand bitcoin ETFs are just around the corner. i would imagine ethereum and ripple would follow soon afterward. this would ultimately depend on these coins making actual investment theses (not just pie in the sky theories floated on reddit) and not being so incredibly volatile.

based on what i’m reading and hearing, maybe late 2018 for bitcoin and early to mid 2019 for eth/ripple? this could be accompanied with a GIGANTIC influx of money both into the etfs and underlying cash markets. so this is the long term bull case for these assets i guess. but lots and lots of hard questions would need to be answered first

etfs would be pegged to the value of the most widely accepted coins, which could include some currently seen as shitcoins

So how would this affect the shitcoins? Current crypto investors make money off gains in the blue chips which they move into the shitcoins? Or the blue chips draw in capital that's currently in the shitcoins and slowly snuff them out?

institutional investors are what's going to kill crypto. they'll be the new whales who unlike asians aren't ultimately true believers and will happily jump ship when prudent, leaving everyone who got in after them holding the bag

not really. i really think you misunderstand relevance of cryptocurrency markets to people that manage big pools of money. these markers are microscopically tiny, unregulated and traded on obscure exchanges. they seem huge to you and i because we can make life changing money on these exchanges, but bill ackman could quadruple or nuke the price of a random coin with a single trade - these aren’t viable assets to hold or trade for big institutions.

tldr - no one gives a fuck about a cardano except gambling coin flippers. i’m absolutely not a true believer (in fact i absolutely hate so much of the ideology underlying cryptos) but i’d like to make money while this bubble lasts. can’t imagine i’m the only one like this, and these markers haven’t died yet

also interest rate hikes. gotta believe so much of the crypto story has to do with yield starved cash floating around in search of return

Does it? Or are people buying crypto thinking about it more like a lottery ticket than a stock or a bond?

Not that there's not money to be made if people are thinking about it like a lottery ticket.

sure that’s how people are thinking about this stuff. but the reason you have cash to gamble is partly due to low interest rates. otherwise you’d be paying down interest and maybe have less money to spend in a lower growth economic environment.

it’s not a coincidence that bubbles are accompanied by periods of low interest rates

You think that’ll be good for crypto? I’m not so sure. Excesses of investable cash are good for crypto. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that crypto and the sotockmarket are booming at the same time for the past year. I’m not saying they’re completely correlated but I would not be surprised if stock market gains feed into crypto.

Source inside a major ibank trading department said they are discussing entering crypto..Apparently they are waiting to get a more clear reading on whether Bitcoin or alt coins have more promise for traction.
