Coin projects have to prove they can generate true demand for their currency through use cases..2018 will be a slow year for crypto if nothing of substance materializes. The market is anticipating results.

No one needs the Vietnamese Ethereum if nothing materializes on the original Ethereum...Speculation on use cases is driving buying of coins. At some point, speculation will dry up if no one sees the tangible benefits. There's still time, but who knows how much

This is smart and dumb at the same time.

It’s smart because obviously investors should be critical about value proposition before putting their money to work. Though it’s surreal to talk about this concept in this space. It’s like talking about the most efficient way to do something inherently irrational (like settting your money on fire)

But this market is driven by manipulation, investor stupidity and excess global liquidity more than anything else. And every coin (including ethereum) would be valued like 95% lower if they were premised on any rational view risk adjusted present value of future cash flows.

There's no way to value them, maybe there never will be. But as long as you're convinced that someone or some business will NEED the currency in the future (and you're convinced that others feel the same way right now) the actual valuation makes no difference.

so jamie dimon and warren buffet are 100% right to thumb their noses at this horseshit then? because finding the bigger idiot isn’t an investment thesis, it’s playing the lottery.

the idea of valuation is that it’s a reason to hold something because of the asset itself. if the valuation makes no diffence, it will go to zero immediately at the first sign of real trouble

also the idea that something becomes a currency is a terrible reason to invest in it. why not hoard all the USD you can then? overall your post has more issues than i care to go through

Could this all collapse and come crashing down? Absolutely. I'm not denying that, and I don't think many people will tell you there's not some possibility of that.

But there's no denying there are successful coins that have held value pretty well over the last five years. It's something new. To try and apply the rules of the stock market to what's happening isn't giving the issue full justice.

“Rules of the stock market”

Dude what is your background? Valuation theory is basically common sense and logic, not mystical Wall Street rules with narrow application.

What if people are idiots and these markets are paper thin (ie these nominal prices aren’t supported by much volume)? Let’s see how much people value these “assets” when the fed raises interest rates and they suddenly have to make choices about which assets to keep on their personal balance sheets

Journalism/Education -> Top 10 mba -> Chose not to pursue startup funding...Valuation theory is important, but startups are sales. Crypto is essentially investing in the fact that the best growth hackers in the world will continue to bring in returns.
