Lol I don't even have to do that (although I could). The 60s, 70s and 90s absolutely MOG the childish, bubblegum films of the 80s. Watch Dirty Harry or Rosemary's Baby and compare it to something like "The Neverending Story". LOL

If we’re limiting the discussion to “prestige” films and excluding big budget/high concept then I can agree, but that’s such a stupid striverish Gene Siskel/Pauline Kael art fag way to think about movies in general and especially the 80s when Ovitz style super agents controlled so much of what was produced. Nonetheless even stipulating to that narrow-minded framework, the 80s still generated plenty of good films and compares favorably with the 2000-present period. Scarface, Full Metal Jacket, Raging Bull, Bladerunner, Blue Velvet, Aliens, Do the Right Thing, plus a bunch of the 90s indie director stars make their earliest stuff that is great like Blood Simple and Sex, Lies and Videotape.

Napster/file-sharing fucked Hollywood in the ass and then the dumb boomers running things tried to fix it by agreeing to give Steve Jobs 33% of all downloads and otherwise intentionally tried to make the online viewing experience as unpleasant as possible. It took until basically now for the media companies to go through all the consolidation and clear out enough boomer fossils (and Covid also helped bigly) that Hollywood can start actually using web distribution to its advantage .

wut? America went woke once Obama was elected so you couldn't make anything actually funny and hollywood realized they could print $ by making capeshit and selling it to the chinks. itunes had fuck all to do with it.

edit: talking about movies. yea music probably sucks because of the internet.

This is just obviously wrong. The biggest, most influential and critically acclaimed movies of the aughts were mega ultra huge budget existing IP products, and then a handful of prestige films by 90s indie directors who made good, also generally from existing IP. LOTR, Dark Knight were gigantic box office success that also won prestige oscars, Avatar lost the prestige Oscars but printed money and was the apex of all the gimmicks Hollywood deployed to try to keep people going to the theater, just like the post Paramount decree period, though it was at least an original screenplay. There Will Be Blood, No Country for Old Men, American Psycho are examples of the later category and Kill Bill and Departed were like hybrids of both.

Cf. 1999 pre Napster when the whole year was indie films and upstart directors because the industry was far more focused on word of mouth and rentals after DVD release, not the first three weeks of box office, as the fundamental metric of a movies financial value.

What you’re pointing to is the effect of millennials being their typical faggot selves on social media, along with the effect of Netflix going nuts buying content and monopolizing most of the top talent in TV. That didn’t really start to change things until pretty late in Obama’s POTUSy. It’s silly to say all of a sudden things immediately changed in 2008, mainly bc it’s obviously false. Just from my list you have Dark Knight and Avatar but there was still plenty of stuff in the early 2010s that fits this same pattern from the 00s, mainly by a lot of the same directors. Eg Wolf of Wall Street was great, but if it came out today it would catch way more shit for glorifying rape culture or celebrating toxic masculinity or whatever other bullshit libs would say on Twitter. Mad Max: Fury Road, Ex Machina, Inception, plenty of shit well into Obama’s second term that was good it just had to be event viewing and a reliable bet as a box office hit. It really wasn’t until oscarssowhite and metoo that prestige film became synonymous with sanctimonious woke rants.

True but that’s because it all moved to TV.

No doubt that Napster and piracy had a huge hand in tanking music as an industry

94 was the best year for movies.

Pulp Fiction

The Shawshank Redemption

Forest Gump

The Prince of Tides (you may not be familiar with it but it's a beautiful very underrated movie taken from a 180 book)
