good one.

there's also how tennis in the very old days used to be challenge round, i.e., the defending champ automatically advanced to the finals. but that's not the same.

better to correct an idiotic thread title in the body of OP than leave an idiotic thread outstanding and have people potentially respond to that thread rather than the new one.

one could say that the ryder coupe effectively gives a slight advantage to the ROAD team, given that the home team generally wins. so it's usually the road team that has to only win 14, not 14.5, to retain the coupe. kinda a good equalizer to take away the home court advantage.

Chess used to be like this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Chess_Championship_1972

Regulations and results

The match was played as the best of 24 games, with wins counting 1 point and draws counting ½ point, and would end when one of the players scored 12½ points.[56] If the match ended in a 12–12 tie, the defending champion (Spassky) would retain the title.
