even by brazilian standards, that's kind of a lot. it allegedly includes 60 gangbangers, 4 cops, and some civilians.
brazil's current POTUS is actually a soft-on-crime leftist, so the reason for this operation is mostly political. allegedly, the red command/comando vermelho (CV) gang has been building ties with colombian gangs with access to drones from the ukraine war, and brazilian cops claim they were attacked by drones during the confrontation.
brazil's government is worried that the CIA and other elements will use CV as paramilitaries to attack them in the future. eg, the US hits venezuela, and brazil is 'warned' to stay out of the way through the use of urban insurgencies in its own cities.
despite being shitlibs, it looks like brazil's government is trying to shut that down. in the past, they would have developed their own proxy gangs to do the fighting, but they seem pressed for time, thus leading to a relatively big and sloppy operation like this one.
