Gen X came of age just as video games were taking off, but instead of making them into something great, they accepted whatever boomers fed them. They gave us shallow arcade clones, licensed tie-ins, and early 3D messes like Gex and Croc, never pushing back against corporate publishers.
That passivity left a weak cultural legacy. When millennials entered the scene with high quality bespoke indie pixel art metroidvanias, Gen X raged. Their resentment came from being displaced AND realizing their own generation had settled for mediocrity.
This does not apply to Japan which carried gaming at this time. Japan doesn't have the same gens.

1. Columbine. Klebold and Harris were born in 1981. This was a seminal moment for millennials. Gen X was definitively, empirically not disposed to shoot up schools imo
2. The 1996 SAT is pivotal because it funneled Losers into college at ever increasing rates due to their high SATs (and inflated GPAs) making them seem better than they were.
3. Consoles. Gen X barely played Games. They played NES for like 4 hours cumulatively from 87-91 and they were done. For millennials, Gaming is Everything. Im a Gamer imo |
