people quickly realized that negative reviews don't mean shit and consequently dropped the quality levels on everything.

amazon was a book store when all of the ebay review shit started.

wut? negative feedback on ebay matters a ton and it's a clear sign that a seller is full of shit if they have even a small handful of negatives.

Amazon reviews are next to useless by comparison except the ones by the losers who bother to poast pics of the items.

it used to. now they have negative reviews fade quickly or something. back in the day one negative review could really fuck up your profile.

i do agree that ebay was late to the game on review score inflation and certainly not the cause of things slipping.

ebay the feedback is of the seller as a way to vet if they are legit or not. amazon and just about everywhere else you're reviewing the product.

this is a great point. shifting to reviewing the product absolves the seller of responsibility when you get to blame the manufacturer for Everything. it also invites a ton of jeet fraud.

because ebay was the first major person to person ecommerce site. having some centralized metric to gauge whether someone was a scammer is obviously important and every site since ebay has done it. especially back in the 90s when the internet was new and scary.

i remember buying stuff on ebay in high school and having to pay via mailing a money order.

lol same with the money orders. it would take like nearly a month from the time you won an auction before you'd actually get the item.

having some centralized metric makes sense and I agree that reviews still seem like the best way to measure it. however, we all should've seen review inflation/fraud coming down the pipeline and I guess that's my entire gripe with the process. we were always Doomed.

back in the early days of the libertarian anti-GC internet it was harder to see this coming. back then there was an incentive to keep reviews honest because the only way it would work was some sort of centralized trust rating.

ever since google removed "don't be evil" from its code of conduct the internet has become outright, unmitigated grift with no attempt to even hide it. review inflation is the same as social media being tuned to maximize screentime rather than giving you want off the bat. google doesn't care whether their reviews are accurate, now that there's few other options they care about maximizing google ads revenue and of course they're going to tee-hee forgive negative reviews for companies that pay them.

they realized the "don't" in "don't be evil" wasn't increasing shareholder value & cut it entirely

they show the last 12 months detail, total feedback score and the year they joined. That's enough to size up the seller as not a scammer and that they aren't selling shit in worse condition than they advertise.
