everything is pretty good. my book has been growing, so that's good. the firm told me i was a lock for equity this year. i figure i'll do this a few years and maybe quit law, although i have a feeling i won't quit.
kids are good. wife is good. i'm still sober, which is cool i guess.
i hope things improve for you, brother.

i really don't know. i have that big saltwater fish tank and i play some warhammer, but those aren't substantial enough to occupy one's time.
not sure i'd want to really retire because i really enjoy what i do. i started liking it a lot when i got to a point financially where i didn't really HAVE to do this anymore. before that, i was always stressed out and neurotic, wondering what if this or that bad thing happened.
maybe i could just tell the firm i wanted out of the equity partnership and would bill like 1000 hours a year but not do any biz dev or rainmaker bullshit.

buying magic beans that you sell for a profit before they grew a beanstalk is essentially the same thing even if the stock beans could conceptually still grow a magic beanstalk while the coin beans were just rocks.
it's all just finance fraudlies. perhaps a better example is PE which is less than neutral because it actively makes things worse and people get very rich off of that too.
all i'm saying is people have made riches off a huge spectrum of fraudlies so there's no sense being incredulous that one popped off when there are plenty of "legitimate" equivalents that are just as fraudulent as coins.

the difference is that a USD replacement via shitcoins - which is what the bet was, more or less - was only possible because of certain...other factors...and if the U.S. was an actual country then tether and these crypto fraudsters would have been shut down a decade ago and everyone involved thrown in prison
i've updated my priors/worldview in light of what has transpired, and it's been both eye opening and extremely unpleasant
but anyone who made major money from this scam is an idiot, look at peterman as the go-to. i also know a vacuous retard irl who has made 9 figures from this stuff, and he can't answer basic questions

it's not that different from the USD replacement via bullion, which is just as spurious, and has recently resulted in a similar uptick in value.
there are plenty of aspie tech geniuses that are measurably very high iq that have gotten rich off crypto. there are also plenty of high iq people that saw the trend and profited without believing it was going to actually be useful some day.
dismissing these people as retarded is myopic. you seem stuck in the "it doesn't make sense so it shouldn't work!" mindset, which is midwit fat part of the iq bellcurve in the two iq tail meme (not saying you are this, just that your POV aligns with this).
if you want to update your priors/worldview, it should be that something doesn't have to make sense or be useful to have value. the value of everything is supply and demand, and the belief that a fraud has to fall apart is empirically untrue. i mean, from your pov the whole financial system is a fraud and that's lasted centuries. so what's so dumb about seeing a bunch of people buying something, buying it, and making money? if being smart = being correct, they were smarter to understand this rather than people like us who were like "bruh it's a scam it's all going to zero wait two weeks".

that's not my perspective, and hasn't been. the evolution has been 3 layers:
layer 1: crypto is a revolutionary technology because it solves certain problems that gold and silver and fiat possess (unlimited monetary printing problems with fiat, transactability, storage issues, etc with gold/silver)
i was down for layer 1 in early 2017 for a bit
layer 2: crypto is a fraud because of tether, which is an unbacked central bank run by a dozen known fraudsters out of the cayman islands or whatever.
this is the layer i got stuck on and withdrew support from crypto in 2017, because it was sooooo obviously a giant and flimsy scam
the idiots like peterman etc remained on layer 1, unable to answer even basic questions about layer 2 (& note that TBF has always deflected any questions posed to him about layer 2)
layer 3: crypto was pumped *because* it is a scam and *because* they controlled it via tether. it allowed members within the cia, epstein, and other government criminals to get filthy rich, and the upper elites allowed it because they wanted to study blockchain at scale before they released cbdcs which would/will be the greatest reduction of freedom in human history
i am at layer 3 now. but those stuck at level 1 got filthy rich despite being utter retards who never grappeled with level 2

You're just not as much of an asshole as me so you do it in this indirect drawn out way instead of just throwing drive by insults at him

not mutually exclusive.
i genuinely hope the best for consuela and am motivated in part by nudging him out of his intellectual stubbornness. of course i'm also bored and like clowning on him. but clowning on someone isn't always meanspirited -- in fact it's a social function that we've evolved to do to create social cohesion and embarrass the antisocial into compliance or exile!
but i wasn't trying to frame my participation as some essentially altruistic act. i'm just saying i already know and agree with what you said, but am pushing forward anyway.

i didn't say that and think personality and cognitive tests have a lot of value. pointing out that it's not conclusive isn't the same as saying it's valueless.
my point is that you're not an openminded person at all. you've poasted here for years and no one would describe you that way. you've also admitted losing many friends and family over being unable to accept their positions on the vaxx and other things. you continue to harass me about tolerating EPAH, lynn, etc. as endorsing their opinions/decisions.
pointing out that you scored highly on openness when you are demonstrably not a very open-minded person is like a loser pointing out that a personality test said they are a high achiever. if i said that just indicates that the person believes they are a high achiever, that's not the same as saying the test is valueless.

it's not the same. a person can firmly believe in something while accepting that reasonable minds can differ. even scientists that are qualified to make independent assessments about the vaccine can admit that reasonable and smarter people than them might disagree. you don't have the ability to make a independent scientific assessment, which means you should be even more open to the possibility of being wrong. that is not the same as not being very, very confident you are correct.
ok, so since you admit that it's possible you are wrong, why do you have trouble tolerating people that disagree when they could be correct?
you don't even need to be open to the possibility of being incorrect to tolerate a divergent opinion. for example, if a friend of mine believes in flat earth i'm not going to be irate about it even though i am 100% certain he's wrong. but it's even easier when certainty is impossible.
so, why do you struggle to tolerate these people since you admit they could be correct?
