Friend is a 10th year associate at a v15ish firm that sounds more demanding that the average v15 firm. Lots of ruined weekends and vacations. But, he says people like him and want him on their matters.

He got an offer at an equally prestigious biglaw firm. He's thinking of taking it. I lean toward yes, he should, because even though biglaw is almost always demanding, he gets worked dumped on him at the last minute before weekends and vacations more than average. He has young kids.

As an aside, he was wondering where partnership prospects would be best. I told him they are essentially 0 at either place because he has no book.

What practice group? People with no book make partner all the time.

How/why do people with no book get breakfast at a v15?

I don't know about V15, but you can make breakfast and make more money at a somewhat lower ranked firm in some cases. Are the going to give him one or those $1 million of counsel deals?

No, he would be making the top senior associate market rate either way. That's not bad. $500k+. See the other recent thread about many "biglaw" partners making no more than that: https://xoxohth.com/thread.php?thread_id=5765548&mc=53&forum_id=2

Does that get you real breakfast? The client probably wouldn't follow you to another firm if you left. That's the only thing that really counts as a book.

In any event, I don't think that would be more likely at the new firm. At his current firm, he has a few years of a good reputation to help him.

All of those firms have fake partnership now for people in this situation. Or almost all of them.

He definitely needs to bail. Sounds like everyone at firm #1 recognizes him for his good work and reliability, but don’t stop to consider his future prospects. They may if he presents an offer from elsewhere. Or they may not. Plan to move
