Woman Jumps to Death

A 24-year-old woman jumped to her death from the balcony of her brother's 25th-floor Midtown apartment yesterday afternoon, falling to the middle of a busy crosstown street, where traffic was stalled for two hours, the police said.

The woman, identified as Charlene Lat, of Saddle River, N.J., jumped about 3:15 p.m. from the building, 159 West 53rd Street, at Seventh Avenue, the police said. She had first climbed onto a chair on the balcony, where she left her shoes, they said.

A cleaning woman who had left her in the apartment found the chair and shoes on the terrace when she returned.

The woman's brother, a federal prosecutor in Newark, was at work at the time, the police said.
