During the 17th century (roughly 1600–1700), when English colonization of North America was accelerating — especially in Virginia, Maryland, and the Chesapeake region — indentured servitude was the dominant labor system before African slavery became widespread.
⚖️ The numbers
Historians estimate that between 40% and 60% of all English migrants to the American colonies in the 1600s came as indentured servants.
In Virginia and Maryland, the proportion was even higher — 70–80% in the first half of the 17th century.
Overall, between 350,000 and 400,000 Europeans came to the North American colonies before 1775, and about half were indentured. |
