I've been overweight for two years, and I've failed to get to a healthy weight and stay at that weight during the entire time. My diet is pretty boring and healthy, but my appetite seems to be all fucked up from stress. I was in great shape until my mid 30s when my gut started growing slowly. At this point I'm frustrated with my inability to lose weight and keep it off, and I'm just too worried about my health now after being fat for years, so I'm starting Wegovy. I took the first pill this morning.

It takes a few months to ramp up to the maintenance dose, so I'm not sure how much it'll help in the beginning. In the meantime, I'm going to add in strength training to my exercise routine, which has just been at least an hour of cardio every single day. I'm going to reduce calories slowly. I used to have a binge eating problem, and my doctor told me to be very careful not to cut out too many calories too quickly because the binge eating could resurface.

Sorry, didn't go into as much detail about my diet. My diet is based on the Mediterranean diet with lots of lean proteins, fruits, veggies, olive oil, legumes, etc. But I have a tendency to eat garbage snacks when I'm particularly stressed. I also used to wake up in the middle of the night feeling starved and would binge eat anywhere from 300 to 800+ calories. So despite being this fat, my blood work came back surprisingly good because the "core" of my diet is still a lot of healthy stuff.

all sounds great, just keep in mind that variety is super important so you get all the diff vitamins and minerals your body needs to function at its best. if you're deciding between meals, go for the one that repeats fewer ingredients from what you've eaten in the prior few days. looking at metabolic health separately from size/weight: eating whole is the #1 thing, and variety within that whole diet is #2 imho. but I'm just a poaster.

After seeing 262 lbs on the scale yesterday I freaked out and immediately started reducing portions for all my meals and also cut out a few things. My guess is I cut out around 500 calories.

This is misguided IMO. The idea of reducing nutrition to macro and calories misses a massive part of the picture (both weight and general health). It's obviously the case that weight loss is driven by the laws of thermodynamics and caloric deficit but this misses the effects on satiety of certain types of food, as well as the critical role of fibre in the health of gut flora.

I don’t think we actually disagree much. My point wasn’t that nutrition quality is irrelevant. It was that people often treat nutrition as if there’s some mysterious variable that can override energy balance when it comes to body weight. I just think nutritionmos often miss the forest for the trees. And I agree that for non-body weight matters it obviously matters, but again I think people are underestimating the extent to which they are just swapping out ingredients that each have different benefits/payoffs.

I'm unemployed, and I have trash insurance that doesn't cover weight loss drugs. So I went with the cheapest option, which is the Wegovy pill. I don't know enough about the alternatives to speak about the pros and cons other than cost.

I eat virtually the same food every day, and a long time ago I did calculate how many calories I was consuming per day. I don't remember the exact number, but I don't actively track calories because, again, I eat virtually the same food every day. I know that what I was eating a week ago was making me fat, so I'm just eating smaller portions of every single meal and/or cutting out specific foods entirely. It seems like a hassle to track every meal, anyway, since I eat six times a day. I'd rather just measure two things once a week: my weight and my waist size, and then adjust my diet accordingly.

Okay I had ChatGPT estimate the calories and macronutrients. I didn't list brands for some foods, so it has some uncertainty.

Total calories: 2,900 - 3,350

Protein: ~205 g

Carbs: ~320 g

Fat: ~110 g

According to my Apple Watch, I burn about 1,150 calories per day though my daily cardio and lots of walking. Not sure how reliable/accurate that is.

Basal metabolic rate is around 2,200 calories per day.

If these numbers are indeed accurate-enough, I might have a slight calorie deficit. But it looks like there's room to cut a little more, so I'll adjust.

I'm not sure how this Wegovy shit works, but if it's really suppressing your appetite, you have room to cut out up to about 600 more calories at the very maximum (20% calorie deficit). Anything more aggressive than 20% will make you lose healthy weight like muscle.

Going to keep my diet as-is for the time being. I think my Apple Watch is underestimating how many calories I burn through exercise and walking.

Update: Two weeks in and I continue to lose weight.

Starting weight: 260.9 lbs

One week ago: 256.8 lbs

This morning: 254.9 lbs

For consistency I measure my weight in the morning after using the bathroom and before I eat or drink anything.

My gut is still enormous and disgusting, but it feels subtly smaller. Still a long way to go.

Update: Exactly three weeks of taking Wegovy today. It seems to be doing something even though I'm still on the very low starter dose: I eat smaller portions for nearly all of my meals, cut out snacks completely except for half a cookie a day, and I don't feel like I'm starving or powering through hunger. Still weighing myself only once a week, so I'm not sure where I'm at right now, but I will weigh myself Monday morning. But I'm pretty sure I've lost more weight because I'm more active throughout the day and don't get tired as easily. And while I still have that disgusting gut, shirts feel noticeably less tight at the waist, and my gut no longer sticks out at the bottom of t-shirts.
