next year, with my origination bonus for 2025, comp should be around 610-650. not sure what this place is doing with my base for next year, but it better go up because i had $1.8m in originations in 9 months. |

Date: December 21st, 2025 10:37 AM Author: Spruce marketing idea at the prior firm, i bought in like $20k worth of shares. they returned that to me after i left, but it had increased to like $45k. i figured they were gonna just keep my money. this was all w-2 income with withholdings done. that firm is set up so that everyone is a "shareholder" and employee of the firm it isn't a partnership. when i was in biglaw, when i made partner i got paid on a k-1 basis, which fucking blew.
i'm eligible for equity at this firm at the end of 2026, and i will make it no question. the money i have in the pipeline would be enough originations for 2026 to qualify because the threshold is pretty low here. even if my book implodes in january, i'll have enough.
equity formula, i understand, looks something like: 40% of your "working attorney" number plus 20% of originations, plus something for being a "good firm citizen." i'm filling a need this firm desperately needs - despite having a bunch of labor attorneys, they are entertainment labor lawyers, which means they don't do ANY NLRB litigation or collective bargaining. all they do is interpret 600-page CBAs that were negotiated decades ago and are renegotiated by some employer association. so i guess they will do something for me to reflect that.
if my book in 2027 looks like it does right now, i'd make $1,080,000 or so my first year as an equity partner. this firm is an actual partnership, unfortunately, so i will have to start my own corporation or some kind of bullshit and pay way more in taxes.
we have a dood in my office who sues foreign govts for terrorist acts and brings in like 20 million a year, and that apparently winds up being a windfall to all the equity partners.
all firms should be set up as companies, this partnership stuff sucks ass. |

So if we had 4 million in profit and if I have a 25 percent interest then I get a million, less whatever I’ve been taking out to live on during the year. Say $200k for that.
It’s complicated by the need to leave some of that money in operations for the following year because we don’t take loans for that. |

when i was in biglaw, an of counsel i hung around with always told me that if i sobered up and quit doing drugs/drinking 24/7, i could have a big book. turns out he was right ($2m is big for me, anyway, and i never thought i'd have anything like this.)

It's a great blessing, and things have blown up fast over the last few years after years of toil. Last year was about 500k, 300k before that, lower for many years before that. This is a result of sustained business building, not one big settlement that won't be replicated.
However, this is a very risky seat to be sitting in. I'm a target in a wide variety of ways that I didn't anticipate, and everything could vanish at any moment. I am trying to take chips off the table and put them into safer assets where I can. But that's not easy to do.
Also, there is a hard, fairly low ceiling on my happiness because of my marriage to an angry, bitter woman who gets mad if she sees me enjoying myself. I don't want to divorce her for family reasons, but matters may come to a head in 2026. |

but honestly, you will probably continue doing well so don't worry.
on the marriage, you should try to save it if you think it's salvageable, but if it really is far gone then you should split up. don't stay together for money. but don't be so fast to peace out. maybe if she knows you are putting your foot down, she will knock off her bullshit. maybe not, but you should give it a shot. |
