wtf are you splitting hairs for? the first stars were created as part of galaxy formation. the hypothetical population 3 stars were likely already creating neon and exploding before galaxies fully formed because pop 3 stars are thought to be mostly enormous stars that blew up extremely quickly

you know neon has been around since not long after the big bang. we can even ignore galaxies. Neon has existed since only 10-20 million years after the big bang when the first hypergiants exploded. talk straight instead of fucking around with your word games

If you're looking for a number, 10^10 years.

What you should be asking is how people arrive at these estimates, then enjoy getting sidetracked by more meaningful stuff like the Weyl curvature hypothesis.

A big part of physics (and math) is being comfortable with variables. Nobody really cares about the exact age of the universe. Same with an exact half-life of the proton.

What's wrong with today's current estimates, and what difference would further refinement make or mean?

People got PhDs doing this shit in the 70s,80s, and 90s. They measured what they thought was cosmic microwave BACKGROUND radiation. Voyager didn't enter the heliosphere until 2012 after the all the Nobel prizes got awarded, and no one has wanted to call flame on all that research that got done before 2012.

Now they are claiming the heliosphere has a tail, because it it's spherical they're fuct

Science advances with new data & measurement techniques.

PS now that Voyager 1 has spent over a decade traversing an enormous wall of plasma that engulfs our solar system, why would you think you can measure faint traces of 14 billion year-old radiation through it?

If you couldn't measure the plasma how could you control for it?

How many Nobel prizes will get cancelled if it turns out people in the 1990s were only measuring the heliosphere?

What's CERN even doing now? We got (and still seem to get) more interesting studies out of Fermilab. Seems like they are one step away from using CERN to make household cleaning products and ditching the "research" altogether

They're doing lots of stuff that's above my head.

They have some stuff that's relatable to laypeople, like https://home.cern/news/news/physics/first-observation-single-top-quark-production-w-and-z-bosons but most stuff is measurement-related.

They really need to release a follow-up to the CERN rap to get people interested again.

HEP is the frontier of science. It's a shame most people don't understand the significance.

I imagine Dalton & Maxwell faced similar criticism in their day.

Muon wobble was literally a new dimension. That's what they said .It's funny to think about what the ontological implications would be even if that turned out to be true

"dimension" is just a fancy way of saying it's a matrix. And it's impossible to estimate how many potentially exist. Availability bias causes us to assign high importance to whatever we can detect right now. Like right now it's gravity waves

Can you think of any reasons why detecting (confirming) gravity waves may be of high import?

Aside: I named my two newest rabbits after Thorne & Wheeler. If you don't have that book, you really should get it.
