Hypothetically, the Cleveland Browns and Ohio State Buckeyes have overlapping bye weeks in late October. Amazon offers each team $10M to play a game, with an extra $25M split among the players and coaches on the winning team. And the NFL and CFP committee say the game will count for making the playoffs and seeding. Each team is highly motivated to win.

Amazon puts in place two unusual tweaks to make the game more fair and exciting:

(1) OSU is spotted 24 points. So, the game starts with a 24-0 OSU lead.

(2) A randomly selected middle-aged, desk-bound lawyer must play QB for the Browns for any snap taken with less than 5 minutes in either half and in overtime. During that time, any Browns snap must go to said lawyer (other than FGs, extra points, and punts--no fakes allowed). And no Browns forward pass is allowed, unless it's thrown by or to that lawyer (Philly Special is OK).

You are selected as that middle-aged, desk-bound lawyer. You have one week to practice with the team.

Rules (clock running, what counts as a catch, etc.) are NFL rules.

Near the end of the first half, the Browns get the ball near midfield for one possession. You hand the ball off 3 times and the Browns kick a field goal. NBD.

Near the end of the second half, OSU scores to go up by 5. The Browns return the kick off to the 20. You head onto the field with 2:15 on the clock. The Browns have 2 times out left.

Will you be able to lead the Browns to a TD and win the game?

I’m leaning towards yes but this hypo is a little premature before we see who they take in the draft and FA this year.

LJL

Are you throwing the ball at all on the drive? More than 5 yards down field?

a college team would never be able to score on an nfl team. since your hypo has that happening it's really hard to answer this.

all any middle adged lawyer (and 99.9% of people including other athletes) could do is hand off the ball. an nfl oline and rb would decimate a college team even without a qb. so, yes, "i" could score in a two minute drill by handing off the ball and staying out of the way.

Disagree on all counts. OSU has some great athletes. On offense, they'll have a reasonable shot at some combination of getting into field goal range, getting a turn over in Browns territory, hitting a big/explosive play. They'll find ways to score a few points.

On defense, OSU could slow down the Cleveland run game if they put 9 guys in the box. And are you really going 80 yards in 2 minutes without attempting a pass to keep them honest?

Finally, I could definitely complete some passes down the field, especially against single coverage.

nah ding. even amazing college teams like osu last year wind up with 14 players drafted, most of which are midrounders that won't see significant play in the nfl. any nfl dline would demolish a colleges. it would be nothing but sacks and ints.

i do think you specifically could make some tight passes in aingle coverage once they notice you're handing the ball off every down. but thats only because you're one of those rare 0.01% balding lolyers that could make it in pro sports under the right conditions.

Yeah, you'd definitely want to do that. Of course, ideally, you'd manage the drive so you score with no time on the clock so they don't get the ball back.

Assuming you carve them up and score too quickly, what position are you playing on D? Maybe a stand-up DE/OLB so you can rush the QB or drop back in coverage? You wouldn't want to waste any of your talents.

i'd throw perfect deep bombs and score quick, play edge on defense sack the tosu qb a few times and force a turnover, then score again. that would be my strategy

Poor form to score the second time and rub it in those kids' faces. We all get that you played a little ball in college, but you should just get a first down and take a knee.

Yeah, the trenches alone win this one. Even a 5-star lineman just isn't ready for NFL size, strength, experience.

FAR more interesting question is what kind of exotic run-only formations you'd see. Could you require them to keep ANY degree of pass defense in place (it's not like you can't hit an nfl WR who's 25 yds downfield with no one within 10 yds of him), or is it more efficient to just give up the ghost and have the equivalent of a no-forward-pass rule in place?

On defense, I think they need one corner on each side of field to have a chance at defending meekly lobbed balls in that direction.

You're right that the Browns' O line will dominate and control the line of scrimmage. But 6-8 yard runs while the clock keeps ticking aren't enough to win the game, especially if OSU can create traffic and get a few 1-3 yard runs in there that chew clock. I'm not saying the NFL team would need to convert 4th downs if they just run it. But running against a defense with 9 run defenders in the box will bleed the clock.
