The 2 kids involved are friends. Both are 14 years old and in 8th grade. Let's name them Peter and Tom. Peter and Tom are classmates and friends. Peter is white. Tom is american of Chinese descent.
Peter is out sick on Monday and returns to school on Tuesday.
Peter makes an innocuous joke that Tom thought wasn't funny. Tom says "You know, Peter, I liked you better when you were are home sick."
Peter responds with "Yeah? Well I liked you better when you were home in China."
Both boys had a laugh and went about their day.
Unbeknownst to them, their teacher overheard the interaction and reported it to the guidance department who then launched an investigation and determined that Peter had committed an act of harassment and bullying: a determination that gets placed in the child's file and follows him through high school and maybe later. Peter was also given an in school suspension.

You need to lead this kind of post with a trigger warning.
This is so fucked up. I’m taking a mental health day for the rest of the week.

reminds me of a time when a teacher saw my buddy slap a girl's ass in school and tried her best to have him suspended over it.
she said that she didn't mind and it was OK that he did it.
teacher tried to make the argument that she doesn't get to decide that.
So much for being able to control her own body.

close married couple friends of mine got a strange call one saturday from someone claiming to be from the state child protective services - they knew details about their child and where they lived etc. They wanted me to be on the call when they called them back.
Turns out that an abuse allegation was made by a teacher at their 6yo's $30k/year private school. Specifically, that there were cigarette burns observed on the child's back at recess. The teacher reported this to child services.
The parents were horrified, they live in a mansion in one of the nicest parts of Atlanta and have a HHI over $500k, and they never even spank their children.
They went through the entire "investigation" which involved having the CPS people inspect their house and living conditions (opened up the $15k Subzero fridge to make sure there was food in it lol). The alleged "cigarette burns" were just a small scab on the kid's back. CPS determined that there was no abuse.
STILL - the parents had to go to 25 hours of "counseling" with CPS - the counselor literally ran out of shit to talk about with them and was like "you guys are model parents."
When the investigation was done, the mother tried to call the headmaster, but only got to some lower school principal who would not transfer her to the headmaster. The lower school principal then proceeded to stand by the abuse allegations against the parents, when the mother objected she said "that's what a child abuser would say" in a mocking manner and make references to the parents burning their kid with cigarettes. $30k/yr school lol.

This is a perfect illustration of what’s wrong with the world today, but not in the way that you think.
The world is always going to be full of busybody women looking to stir up drama and cast themselves as heroes and snide functionaries occupying middling levers of power. The teacher and the principal are just naturally occurring imperfections that we have to live with. Human blackheads.
But the way that we’re supposed to control these sorts of barely useful members of society is through community and the power of social connections. In any sane version of the world this story would have been quietly disseminated through churches and social clubs and workplaces and either that schools enrollment would have fallen off a cliff or the other parents would have staged an insurrection. The teacher would get run out of town and the principal would get keelhauled by his schools board and would be sufficiently chastened to know better for the rest of his career.
