It's become much bigger than it really is because everyone is turning it into the scandal they want to believe in and using it as a pretext for their own narratives.
Starmer is hugely, deeply, enormously unpopular in the UK. This is just a mechanism to get rid of him and install a new PM in hopes of reviving Labour's fortunes.
