The Easy Bay Times has announced a new policy aimed at correcting the the racially disparate manner in which it has previously covered local news. This comes after a paper published by UC Berkley Dean and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Geeta Anand exploring how racial bias permeates local media.

"We have to come to terms with the our historic role in propping up institutional racism" says Frank Pine, Executive Editor of the East Bay Times "People of color are disproportionately targeted by police, and those crimes are disproportionately reported by outlets such as ours. But no longer."

The new regime of racially corrective reporting standards includes several measures aimed at correcting historical racial bias. For example, the race of criminal suspects will no longer be reported by the Easy Bay Times unless they are of white or Asian decent. Additionally, convicted criminals will have their convictions reported as "allegedly" occurring, recognizing the historic injustice that is now endemic in the criminal justice system. Those maps only show crimes that police bother investigating. This may actually be a good thing as some theft and break ins in nice neighborhoods are actually overreported while crimes in less desirable areas are not investigated at all, and thus never reported.

Ive lived in a lot of diverse and differing neighborhoods and never once did the reported crime rates seem to correspond with the neighborhood. I doubt very much the methods they used for reporting these things accurately reflected the safety of the neighborhoods at all
