I am considering a road trip Des Moines-Omaha-Kansas City-Topeka-Wichita-Dodge City-Manhattan. Does ANYONE have input on these fine destinations?

did this probably a decade ago and it was actually pretty boring.

sunflower fields and the Eisenhower library are the only real memories i have.

if i were with some people who were into exploring dead small towns it might have been a bit better.

The SAC Museum about 30-40m outside of Omaha and the WW1 memorial in KC are also big draws for me.

the cities are pointless and boring. it's only worth doing if the goal is to see weird land features like the sandhills in western nebraska.

My thinking was:

Des Moines - Iowa State Fair

Omaha - See a buddy + go to SAC Museum

KC - BBQ + WW1 Memorial

Topeka - Seems to be a Brown v Board of Ed museum, capitol and Evil Knievel museum (lol)

Wichita - Cessna, Kansas Air Museum, etc...

Dodge City - Wild West

Manhattan - Sync up with KSU season opener

You better hit the Quad Cities for the bort content.

When you’re there go on the sky bridge to nowhere, that looks really interesting.

What I'm about to say doesn't really apply to where you're going in the eastern plains because there's agriculture and cities, but

My favorite thing about the Great Plains is how fucking huge and empty they are. Yes, you already "know" this about the plains just from looking at a map or flying over them.

Being in western Nebraska off the interstate (very important) was very interesting to me. It's like it is so boring there that it somehow becomes interesting in just how boring it is.

And there's 2000 fucking miles of it from Edmonton down to Texas, hundreds of miles wide. And a lot of people never experience it because they are flying over it or stick to the interstates.

Probably not worth driving hundreds of miles out of the way just to be in the middle of nowhere. And you're pretty well traveled so maybe you've experienced similar desolation before.

start in Cedar Rapids. 45 minutes south is the town Riverside, the future birthplace of James T Kirk. It’s worth a visit.
