depends on what you're counting - current home value to official permitted house space? in that case mine's about $1,300/sqft, but i have a remodeled garage office that i'm currently poasting from that would drop it to about an even $1k/ft.
purchase cost to permitted space around $1k/ft, purchase cost to total usable space under $800/ft.
also socal.

Yeah, as EPAH surfs in his own backyard in Hawaii, I am sure he is crying uncontrollably about the fact that he doesn't live in a Main Line Philly suburb.

Mine is >double anything posted above.
It’s incredibly wasteful, but it is cool.

Yes, sort of, as I go up through the hatch in the roof. It’s not like I have to climb a giant ladder.
I have to say, it’s 180 to have a mansion albeit wasteful.
I do like walking the gardens and pruning things. I enjoy my chainsaw on a stick. And then I throw the stuff in a pile to dry out and then burn what I cut off in my cheapest on Amazon fire pit.

Is 5200 square feet really the largest so far? My parents' house (that I will probably inherit when they kick the bucket) is around 5600 square feet. It's nice enough, I suppose, but I'm surprised that nobody has a larger house on prestigious law bort. Some of my parent's neighbors have houses that are significantly larger and nicer.

If you want an old house, it’s basically impossible to find things like tall ceilings, giant rooms (like a ballroom — most of which were added later — or large living room and dining room for entertaining), decent closets, functionally sized kitchen, large bathrooms etc. absent buying a mansion with many more bedrooms than are reasonable. People had more children and extended family and had servants 100 years ago and floor plans reflect that. So while a modern design might have non-bedroom spaces that were the same size at call it 6-7k sq/ft, 5-6 bedrooms/baths to get that in a 100 year old house you have to buy something 10k sq/ft. with 10 plus bedrooms (including small ones for servants).
And that is not accounting tor the fact that old houses are often three stories of living space above ground and modern houses are rarely more than two (although finished basements are a thing).
If you study design and house plans it all makes sense.

To me, that is an excellent question. The stupid thing is that my parents' ~5600 square foot house doesn't even have that many bedrooms. One time my sister was visiting with her two kids. I asked if I could come visit. My parents told me that they would have to put me in a hotel room because there was no room in the house. I'm like, "You have 5600 fucking square feet." I guess they felt like they needed a huge ass "great room" on both floors for the one time per year when they have guests over. I understand the appeal of a gigantic house if you have a large family and want to make it easy for your kids and grandkids to visit. But I don't really understand having a huge house just for the sake of having a huge house.
