it may predate the evolution of anatomically modern humans. It's a dreadfully important tale when reduced to its bare elements, yet two crucial elements of the story have varied across time and place:

1. the virtues one must posses in order to see the clothes are not the same everywhere. In some re-tellings it only has to do with the king's ancestry, which isn't anything we'd associate with virtue today. But maybe that's the takehome point: whatever we lab rats consider "virtuous" in a leader at any given time is probably a load of horseshit, objectively.

2. who spills the beans (or whether the beans even get spillt) can vary. Hans Christian Andersen (IIRC) deserves credit for giving it to the kid. If it wasn't HCA, it was some other white European. I'd actually put that in my top ten list of great contributions to society by white men.
