An aspiring lawmaker in Maine has touted claims that 5G cell phone technology causes Covid-19 and that Obamacare was set up as a child-trafficking operation.
Justin Cartier, a longtime resident of Bangor who is running for City Council, shared a series of posts on his now-deleted X account promoting a range of wild beliefs.
His bio on the social media platform read that he was 'Tired of he [sic] uniparty and the woke agendas of the Blackrock Pedo Puppets,' Bangor Daily News reported.
Cartier confirmed to the outlet that the account belonged to him before it was deleted less than 24 hours later.
His account reportedly reposted the 5G and Obamacare conspiracy theories, as well as claims that Jewish people control politics and society.
When asked about his post stating that 5G causes Covid-19, Cartier told the outlet that 'there's interesting coincidences.'
'Like in 1918 when the Spanish influenza first started, that's when we rolled out AM/FM radio,' he said.
'And if you follow the rollouts of each thing, including radar, coming out, there's different sicknesses that started at the same time. Are they related? I don't know.'
Cartier also referenced videos of people comparing the growth of plants that are placed next to Wi-Fi 'signals,' claiming that 'we're basically turning our children into guinea pigs by putting all these cell phone towers and 5G transmitters on top of all the schools.'
'The amount of funding we have to do for our special ed at our schools here in Bangor is huge. And what is contributing to that? Could that be a piece of the puzzle?'
The Food and Drug Administration has found no consistent or credible scientific evidence of health problems caused by the exposure to cell phone radio frequency.
Cartier also re-shared a video of a public commenter at a local school committee meeting who criticized diversity, equity and inclusion and declared the LGBTQ+ community a 'pedophilic degenerate cult,' Bangor Daily News reported.
'Reposting a video doesn't necessarily mean I agree with everything,' he told the outlet.
'It could have been to create discussion around it. But there's certainly unelected elites, I don't know what religious affiliation any of them would have, that are in control of the world as we know it... I think it's just to create discussion and ask, "What if?"'
Cartier, who said he is not currently registered with a political party, will face eight other candidates in his City Council race.
The candidate, who ran unsuccessfully as a Republican for a Maine House seat, said his goals include lowering taxes and using his personal addiction recovery experience to help Bangor overcome its biggest challenges.
Cartier was convicted of four misdemeanors between 2003 and 2013 that he attributed to his alcohol addiction, the outlet reported.
'The city was such a wonderful place to grow up. It was safe, it was clean. It's not the same safe city it once was,' he said.
'Our taxes are getting out of control and a lot of my neighbors are having trouble putting food on the table to cover the increase in taxes.'
Cartier said budget cuts could be made to allow for the funding of mental health services and peer recovery programs, noting his personal experience with addiction and homelessness allows for a unique perspective.
'The same things that made me an addict are the same things that make me very good at carpentry, which is my chosen business today, and the same things that will make me good as a City Councilor,' he told Bangor Daily News.
'I don't give up. I don't let up. I keep coming.'
