Lee was the best friend abolitionists ever had. He traded MASSIVE casualties in all his "brilliant victories" and ultimately got 1/3 of Southern military age white men killed while keeping the war going long enough that Lincoln made ending slavery a condition of victory. Was he retarded? No. His father and uncles were founding fathers, signing the Declaration of Independence and fighting alongside Washington. He was top of his class at West Point. He was an American in a family that personified service and sacrifice. He opposed secession. And yet when the time came, he didn't take the easy route by leading the Union Army to a quick victory. He chose the Confederacy ... He did so because he knew there could be no lasting peace through a negotiated settlement or through a quick defeat. He knew a decisive Confederate LOSS after a brutal, grinding fight was the only way to solve the slavery question and save the Union. In the most patriotic act in American history, he became the villain and performed the blood sacrifice required to make up for the 200 years of blood drawn by the bondsman's lash.

"long enough that Lincoln made ending slavery a condition of victory" I thought the Proclamation was a disaster for the Union during the war (not the other way around) like 3/5 Union officers flat out resigned commissions when they heard of it.
