An elite army unit in Madagascar that helped President Andry Rajoelina seize power in a 2009 coup has declared control over the country’s military, intensifying fears of a potential mutiny amid growing anti-government unrest.
In a video statement on Sunday, CAPSAT officers claimed authority over all branches of the armed forces – land, air and naval – and named General Demosthene Pikulas as the new chief of staff.
The dramatic announcement by the CAPSAT unit came just hours after the presidency warned of an “attempted illegal and forcible seizure of power,” marking the most serious challenge yet to Rajoelina’s rule.
The declaration follows weeks of youth-led protests that began on 25 September over chronic water and electricity shortages.
Inspired by similar Gen-Z movements in Kenya and Nepal, the demonstrations have evolved into a broader uprising against Rajoelina’s government, with demands for his resignation, accountability for protest-related violence and the dissolution of key institutions including the Senate and electoral commission.
CAPSAT condemned the use of force against civilians and urged fellow soldiers to disobey orders to fire on protesters.
On Saturday, CAPSAT soldiers left their barracks in the Soanierana district and joined protesters in Antananarivo’s May 13 Square – a symbolic site of past political uprisings.
Their arrival was met with cheers from demonstrators, many of whom had clashed with police and gendarmes earlier in the week.
The United Nations reports that at least 22 people have been killed and over 100 injured since the protests began.
In a statement released Sunday, the presidency called for unity and dialogue, asserting that any attempt to seize power “violates the Constitution and democratic principles.”
The government maintained that Rajoelina remains in the country and continues to manage national affairs.
The situation remains fluid, with no confirmation from other military units regarding CAPSAT’s claim. |
