everyone was digging tunnels and creating IEDs to blow up the other side's tunnels and bury men alive. There was a prolonged period where all anyone did was dig tunnels, and both sides would end up fighting with pixaxes and explosives in these tunnels, with rotting corpses everywhere and no oxygen. Imagine the smell

forgot to mention everyone was getting sick. The ottomans got too sick to fight, but people living in Vienna also got sick and died so that the city was almost depopulated when the fighting ended. The whole city was just wall to wall corpses
