At dawn, the desert is still cool enough to breathe easily. Jacob, a stocky man in his fifties, lies on the single-lane highway outside his settlement, his head propped on a rolled blanket. The pavement, he says, holds the night’s chill longer than the red sand. “You can feel the country here,” he explains. “The ground is straight, the wind comes steady, and you can hear everything coming.” A truck growls faintly in the distance, still miles away. Jacob does not move. “The road is part of the land,” he says while huffing a plastic bag full of gasoline. “If you know how to listen, it tells you what is coming before you see it.”
