Definitely something is happening and not just for a few hours, but for several days now, allied navies are treating this as a live, ongoing operation rather than an exercise, if a Russian submarine really did get close enough to shadow the USS Gerald R. Ford, the intelligence value would be huge. By riding in the carrier’s wake, a submarine could capture the Ford’s acoustic and electronic signature essentially its unique "thumbprint." With that data, Russian forces could track the Ford much more easily in the future and even prepare targeting solutions in a crisis or wartime scenario.
Anyway, we wait for more information, but something is definitely happening there.
