Newsom understands that Trump has, for better or worse, connected with a lot of Americans by acting, swaggering and tweeting like a professional wrestler. A lot of people are entertained by this act, for better or worse. And you aren't going to "get" to those voters by acting like some pencil-necked "responsible" politician, tut-tutting about how mean and bad Trump is.
You get to those voters by entering the arena in a cloud of smoke, with your own theme music and a folding chair in your hand. We're headed to Idiocracy, like it or not. Newsom understands this, which is why he's gotten so much traction by acting like an idiot himself. |
