need richmos to break down why they'd rather have a smaller plane, but i imagine it's very costly to operate a huge plane that they dont need and they'd prefer to luxe up some small gulfstream

i assume this would be bought by some sports team or something for charter flights, not some rich boomer.

Not only that, but larger planes often take off way heavier than they can land, so if there's a problem necessitating an immediate landing, they're literally dumping fuel. It's just not economical at all to operate a large plane.

It's cost per hour and nothing else. Big planes burn a lot more fuel.

it's very likely more than that. big plane prob costs more to maintain, costs more to furnish. maybe even more costly airport fees.

LJL maintenance & even the mandatory full inspections of every component are nothing compared to fuel. We're talking several orders of magnitude difference in expenses. Big jets burn like $40k/hour

I know a few people who own businesses that provide services for small time private plane owners (painting and detailing). I visit them at the Scottsdale airport sometimes. It's absolutely astonishing how much shit costs, even for tiny little planes.

also the downtime. guy i know with an executive jet is flying commercial half the time because it is constantly in for some sort of maintenance, or the staff are unavailable for some reason.

the stuff that you can intuit is more expensive is still about 10x more expensive than you guess it is.

one-of-one aircraft interiors cost a fortune, because very single part needs to pass a battery of air-safety tests for things like flammability, g-force, etc. this is part of the reason why anachronistic things in commercial planes "stay there" for so long. your armrest has an auxiliary port for headphones in 2025 because replacing a single armrest would cost about a million dollars (for the first one).

so there aren't many people in the market for a $20M plane that are okay with an interior from Jet2's cattle-class. at least a gulf stream has a basic geometry you can work with, so maybe you can get away with just re-upholstering (which still will cost 100x more than you think).

once you are in a big jet, you are a tiny fish in a big and resource constrained pond. your engines need to be overhauled, and you're not getting a discount on that because you got the plane cheap--your engine overhaul price will be well more than half of that purchase price, maybe in fact equal to the purchase price, given the fact that every maintenance shop is going to prioritize every single engine before yours, because those are engines owned by entities that generate 99% of the maintenance revenues and you're just some striver dumbass with four dilapidated GE-90s looking to score a bargain proportional to what you got on the airframe.

so a $20M plane that is 25 years old is really something like:

$20M for the plane

$10M for the interior

$15M for the engine overhaul you will be doing

And that interior work is going to be done on a plane that is pretty close to end-of-life, for which the person you end up selling the plane to (if any) will have zero value for, since its probably going to end up returning to service in an 800 seat configuration for Kabul Airlines in 2030.

and for all of that trouble, you get a plane that costs about 4-5x more per hour to run than a gulfstream. why bother? so that you can LARP as a low-rent Saudi Prince and put a california king in the back of the tube? Is that worth flushing $10M down the drain today AND spending $20,000 instead of $5,000 an hour to fly the thing?

disclaimer: I don't know anything about private planes and I made all of this up.
