We talked about It and he said they played at a venue in Harrisonburg Virginia last weekend for about 100 people.

I remember when they were up and coming back in the 80s and played in Richmond venues.

This would have been about 1985-6?

I didn’t track the local stuff super closely like my friend but he would go to gwar shows and tell me about them. We both liked Sex Pistols DK Black Flag etc at the time also I had a broader range of interest than he did and was less punk and less cool accordingly

I asked my dad once if I could go to a show and he said no not if no adults are going.

So I just heard about it after the fact from my one friend who was allowed to go. He described it at great length to me. I remember we were at science lab and one guy said that stuff sounds terrible how do you even say this is good music and my friend told him to fuck off.

I was very young and my friend who was allowed to go was sort of indulged as an only child to older parents. Lucky guy. He got a trench coat and combat boots in middle school

i only saw gwar once (not really a fan), at the "gwar b que" in richmond in 2015. this was actually right after i first interviewed at the biglaw firm and i remember obsessively weighing in my head whether i should do biglaw. i also got drunk and threw up while standing in the crowd watching the Descendents.

Gwar has a bar here in town. Called Gwar Bar. I almost went there for a drink when I was waiting for an Amy winehouse tribute band to start up at the canal club but it was too far away and a cheaper bar was across the street from the canal club

Some of Gwars old paper mache costume stuff is on display at the Valentine Museum.

i think i wandered in there back in 2019. have you heard of Avail? they're 180 as shit and from richmond. melodic punk. great, great band. they did a few reunion shows and one was in RVA.

i drove down with a couple friends and got rather high on coke before the drive, and very coked up once we got there. we were walking around going to bars and stuff, and i think the gwar bar was one of them. the Avail show was at The National.

singer died of a heroin overdose 10-11 years ago.

the richmond punk scene is strange. when i was a youngster, there were three bands that richmond was known for: gwar (bunch of dope fiends who dress like monsters and run around with giant fake dicks onstage), avail (pop punk/melodic hardcore singalong music), and 4 walls falling (straight edge hardcore, left wing politics shit). there was some group punk rock house, and members of all three bands lived there, which is just odd to imagine.

i think the singer of gwar was still living in that house when he ODed.
